Houthis attack Riyadh Airport, as tensions escalate
On Thursday, October 8, 2026, Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis escalated their attacks against Saudi Arabia, as they try to shut down the country’s airspace and oil facilities with missile fire. In the latest attack, the group struck Riyadh’s airport.
In this case, an Airbus A320 belonging to national carrier Saudia was completely destroyed in the attack. This is the second time that the airport has been struck by a missile this week, with the Houthi militia warning that “all global airlines” flying in Saudi Arabian airspace are at risk.
A spokesperson for the Houthis claims the group “struck its target with precision,” using a ballistic missile, saying that “we reiterate our call and warning for the last time to all global airlines regarding the consequences of continuing to operate flights in Saudi airspace, which has become a theater for our military operations.” Meanwhile other sources dispute the claim of what happened, saying that the plane was actually hit by shrapnel from an interception of another missile.
The positive news is that no passengers are believed to have been on the plane at the time of the attack, and it’s believed that there were no fatalities. That’s fantastic, because the outcome could’ve been very different if this were a fully loaded plane.
As you’d expect, this attack brought operations at the airport to a standstill, and many airlines have suspended flights to the airport. The Houthis are targeting Saudi Arabia over the country’s support for government forces in Yemen’s reignited civil war.
Saudi Arabia is backing Yemen’s United Nations-recognized government, to take back the territory from the Houthis. This conflict is an overspill from the war between the United States and Iran, and is just the latest layer of chaos in this whole mess.
This can’t be good for Riyadh Airport’s prospects
Admittedly the public is often quick to forget things, but the Houthis essentially saying that all airlines aren’t safe in Saudi Arabia isn’t exactly great for optics. Of course the intent is also to instill fear, but I imagine on some level that works.
This is very bad timing for Riyadh Airport in terms of the growth it’s currently seeing. For one, you have Riyadh Air expanding at a very fast pace, and that includes trying to attract connecting passengers traveling between other regions. I have to imagine that many people may think twice before connecting through Riyadh (along with other points in the region) at the moment.
For that matter, Delta is expected to launch a route from Atlanta (ATL) to Riyadh later this month. My goodness, talk about absolutely awful timing. I imagine that this attack will finally be what it takes for the airline to postpone the launch of this flight.
Keep in mind that safety aside, demand for this flight has been virtually non-existent, based on everything we know. Like, we’ve possibly never seen a new route with such little demand. But since the route is being subsidized by the Saudi Arabian government, it sure seems like the economics for this flight could work for Delta even if the plane just flies empty to Riyadh.
Delta has reportedly not been wanting to postpone the launch in light of that, and also to avoid bad optics around this route, and the carrier’s partnership with Riyadh Air. But I have to imagine that at this point aircraft insurers will prevent this route from launching.

Its sad to see the state of affairs in the middle east. So many of those countries have been trying so hard to become tourism hubs, and many have succeeded. All of those decades long efforts come to such a sad end.
The FlyDubai incident and the bombings at Kuwait airport and now this incident have made things exponentially worse. Right now if the pilot doesn't get you a missile must. That is the sad state of affairs in Middle East aviation.
Things are not unfolding as President Trump expected. A collateral effect to the war in the Middle East has been the exposure of US forces based in Europe to drone attacks. No one should be surprised if Iran slips drones into Mexico and the US mainland sees attacks from the south.

DL's earnings come out in about an hour. Chances are high we'll hear about RUH plans but it does seem unlikely they or their insurers would allow them to fly into an active war zone. Postponing the RUH flight just gives them more aircraft to expand TPAC flights.
and as long as Saudi Arabia is in the crosshairs of conflict along w/ the mess in the Strait of Hormuz, the price of oil will come down no time soon which is bad news for a whole lot of parties including airlines around the world.
Tim, you’re right that the insurance premiums are gonna be a real issue for anyone operating in the region. At this point, Delta would be foolish to proceed with that RUH route. The subsidies aren’t worth the risk. Besides, after SEA incident, one a350 is gonna out for a bit.

Saudi Arabia is coming to terms with the folly of putting all their eggs in one basket with this administration, after our dear leader rebuffed their requests to bomb the Hauthis. Besides, the whole world knows now that we are short of ammo to sustain a prolonged conflict. This administration has zero credibility now internationally.

Did you see the big cargo revenue increases? Those who tell us the A350 is too big clearly don't want to see the increased cargo revenue they are generating for DL - because TPAC and the near complete conversion to A350s is almost entirely where DL's extra cargo revenue is coming from.

I basically agree with your premise however the Houthis aren't a legitimate representative of the Yemen Govt.
I'm not sure how someone is meant to do that. The Houthis don't have obvious markings that differentiate them from normal civilians and there's a large swathe of mountains for them to retreat into.
Any attempt to do so would probably lead to another Afghanistan situation where they're impossible to stop and would reassert control the second the forever war ends.
